Rody to grace Kadayawan basketball opening tonight

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte is expected to grace the opening rites of the 28th Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament set to open at 6 p.m. today at the Davao City Recreation Center (Almendras Gym).

Christopher Go, Duterte's executive assistant, said Friday that he will ask the Mayor to attend the opening of the four-day league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas under regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Games schedule will be known after the brief opening program.

The Go-managed team, The Royal Mandaya Hotel-City Mayor's Office (TRMH-CMO), is the defending champion of the cagefest.

TRMH-CMO, to be powered by NLEX Road Warriors' seven-footer Greg Slaughter and 6'7" Ian Sangalang along with former Rain or Shine import Jamelle Cornley and Devon Sullivan, will play the single round-robin elimination with 2012 runner-up Montaña Pawnshop, Goldstar Hardware and visiting Omega Pain Killer from Cebu City. The top two squads will fight for the crown while the third and fourth teams will battle for third.

Coached by Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights mentor Miguel Solitaria, TRMH-CMO is poised to keep the title of the cagefest backed up by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office under officer-in-charge William "Butch" Ramirez.

Goldstar Hardware and Montaña Pawnshop may have downplayed their chances against the reigning champion team owned by brothers Glenn and Gerome Escandor, they are, hwever, confident to put up a good fight against the highly-touted team as they parade services of their own imports and veterans from the Asean Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Asociation, PBA D-League, NCAA and UAAP.

CMO will offer a cash prize of P100,000 to the champion and P60,000 to the runner-up. The next two teams will receive P40,000 and 30,000, respectively.
