THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) hopes to complete the second phase of the rehabilitation of the Baguio Athletic Bowl before the deadline in November.
DPWH District Engineer Alexander Castañeda said the department is eager to finish the project right after the peak of the rainy season.
“If the rainy season will already pass by the end of this month we assure that the DPWH will closely monitor the project so the contractor could already complete the last part of the phase two construction,” Castañeda said.
He is banking on the prediction the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) that the El Niño will start in October.
“Hopefully totoo yung El Niño prediction para magkaroon ng window of opportunity itong contractor to finally finish what needs to be finished,” Castañeda said.
Phase two will be 80 percent complete by this month, he said.
Aside from the finishing touches on the bleachers area, the challenge is laying the rubber track on the oval.
The DPWH had announced that the chemicals and rubber granules to be used in installing the track arrived from Switzerland last August.
“So far we cannot start to install the rubber track. According to the supplier the pavement must be completely out of moisture upon fitting,” said Castañeda, adding the violation of the terms will void the seven-year warranty from the foreign supplier.
“According to experts kapag pinilit nating i-install masisira lang yung material,” he explained.
The DPWH office in Baguio is also coordinating with design officials from the Philippine Sports Commission to ensure the 70-year-old sports arena meets the commission’s requirements. (MVP)
