Cotabato groups to join protests vs 'pork'

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Progressive groups and other civil society organizations in North Cotabato will join the nationwide-march on Monday to abolish ‘pork’ barrel.

Norma Capuyan, head of the Apo Sandawa Lumadnong Panaghiusa sa Cotabato (ASLPC), urged both houses in Congress to pass legislations that would abolish pork barrel, which has become a source of corruption in the government.

The ‘pork’ of the congressmen and senators, she stressed, has not helped ‘changed lives’, especially the poor residents living in the hinterlands, including the tribal people.

Capuyan said her group, together with other progressive individuals in North Cotabato, will march along the streets of Kidapawan City to call for ‘pork’ abolition.

Meantime, members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) in the Philippines will run, walk, bike and roll against pork barrel at the Quezon Memorial Park in Metro Manila, around 6:30 a.m., on Monday.

“We are demanding for the abolition of the pork barrel system and re-channel the pork barrel funds to education, health and other social services. In addition, we are supporting House Bill 1535 or “Abolishing the Pork Barrel System,” the ACT said in a statement.
