Lancers turn back Warriors for fourth win

NINE-TIME champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers wasted a 23-point lead then survived repeated rallies to beat the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 77-63, and secure solo second place in the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Reigning Rookie/MVP Hernal “Wowie” Escosio and crafty guard John Abad prevented the Haier-backed Lancers from breaking apart when the Warriors turned a seemingly lopsided
game into a close one.

Escosio scored the game-high 16 points and had seven rebounds and two steals, while Abad scored 14 along with two rebounds, two assists and four steals. UV is now 4-1, while USC dropped to 2-2 for a tie with University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).

In the high school games, the USC Baby Warriors held UC Baby Webmasters’ top scorer Justine Dacalos to just 11 points in a 70-41 rout; the USJ-R Baby Jaguars snapped a five-game slide after beating the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 78-67, and the UV Baby Lancers escaped the Don Bosco Technological Center, 55-52.

In the college division, the Green Lancers had a very fluid first half, starting with a 16-5 blitz. USC’s woes continued when it failed to score a bucket under the aggressive defensive rotations of the Lancers for most of the second quarter, allowing UV to post a 32-9 lead in the first half.
