A trick art museum that clicks

AT FIRST glance, the museum would be considered plain and ordinary. It has painted images of landmarks, cultural nuances, wildlife and famous personalities—scenes that are so familiar and can be easily viewed over the Internet. What viewers won’t immediately realize is that the fun starts when one starts clicking. And in this selfie and Instagram-obsessed generation, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Welcome to the Cebu Trick Art Museum at J Centre Mall, where the “trick” is in how the shadows of the paintings make your photos seem real and three-dimensional—as if you were in the actual scenario itself. Have you ever imagined yourself with butterfly wings? Holding Lady Liberty’s torch? Running away from a crashing van? Or perhaps playing in the lion’s den? Now’s your chance—well, on a picture, at least.

It’s all about proper angling. Seasoned photographers would find this a breeze, but if you’re pretty good in doing food photography before your every meal, then you should do fine as well. Otherwise, no need to worry, as each painting has tips on how to take the picture, and attendants are also around to assist.

The Cebu Trick Art Museum traces its origins to visual illusion museums that are highly popular abroad, particularly in South Korea. The idea was brought to Cebu by entrepreneur Michael Yang, who wishes to bring a new kind of entertainment option to Cebuano families. At present, he said that only Bohol and Manila also have this kind of museum in the Philippines.

The Cebu Trick Art Museum occupies 1,525 sq. m. on the mall’s top level. It currently houses 50 paintings, which Yang said will be updated every three months depending on popularity. There will also be what he dubs as “amazing rooms,” where there will be special visual trick surprises. Then lastly, to complement the guests’ optical illusion experience, the museum will also have 4D ride that will be fully operational by October. Yang added that special arrangements can also be made for guests who want to hold events and functions in the museum.

The Cebu Trick Art Museum will be open to the public starting Sept. 1. Operating hours will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. For further information, check out the museum’s official Facebook page at (facebook.com/TrickArtCebu).
