Comelec reactivates gun ban committee

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday reactivated the committee that would accept application for gun ban exemption in connection with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls to be held next month.

In an interview, Comelec Law Department head Esmeralda Ladra said that they are now accepting requests for the renewal of those granted exemption in the May 2013 midterm elections.

She added that those who failed to get an exemption may also file their applications.

"We already activated the gun ban (committee) and based on the resolution of the commission those who were given certification of authority last May to file their request to renew their authority," Ladra said.

She noted that they will not issue personal exemption.

In Resolution 9735, Comelec said the validity of the gun ban exemptions in the May polls will be extended for the coming elections.

"Gun ban exemptions issued in connection with the May 13, 2013 National and Local Elections shall be recognized as valid for purposes of the October 28, 2013 synchronized barangay and SK elections," the resolution stated.

The gun ban will start at the beginning of election period, which is on September 28 until November 12. (FP/Sunnex)
