Deceased MisOr board member’s wife accepts husband’s post

THE Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental has chosen the wife of the former board member Roldan Lagbas to replace him at the Provincial Council.

Lagbas was one of the victims of the July 26 bombing in a mall here.

Susan took her oath to Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano during the flag-raising ceremony on Monday, September 2.

Emano said Susan, 43, will assume the post as soon as her appointment papers are complied with.

A street sweeper in the province who refused to give his name said it was already understood that a direct kin or relative will replace Lagbas.

“But those who will represent should have knowledge to take the seat as board member,” he said.

Emano said it took them some time to choose Lagbas’ replacement because they wanted to make sure that his relative who will take his place will embrace the duty as public servant.

He said they chose Susan over her son because she can handle the job well.

Emano said Lagbas’ son is not capable because he is still 17 years old and too young to handle such big responsibilities.

Emano said Susan will be given a chance to sit in and observe for two sessions, and everything she needs to know on laws and rules of the Sanggunian will be provided so she will be able to comprehend with her new task.

For his part, opposition Board Member Jabi Bernaldez has apprehensions on Mrs. Lagbas’ appointment.

Bernaldez said it has now become a practice in Philippine politics that succession of a position would come from a relative even if they have no qualifications.

“But I will give her the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see if she can perform her husband’s duty,” Bernaldez said.

Susan, who was expected to observe in the regular session Monday afternoon, did not appear at the session hall.

However, in a phone interview with Susan, she said she is thankful to Emano for choosing her.

She said it is a privilege to represent her husband, hoping that she will be able to finish what her husband had started.

She was always with her husband in most of his functions as provincial legislator, Susan said she is already familiar with her new task.

Bernaldez said Lagbas will chair the sports and women committee, the previous post her husband.
