Coal power plant to be constructed in Iloilo

THE Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) is set to construct another coal-fired power plant producing 150 megawatts (MW) in Barangay Ingore, La Paz district in Iloilo City on October.

The PEDC, a subsidiary of Global Business Power Corporation (GBPC), said the expansion project amounting some P6.2 billion will meet the demands of the growing power in the city.

It is expected to finish in 33 months or in the middle of 2016.

The power demand in the city has steadily increased in 2013, breaching the peak demand of 90MW due to increased business activities and construction works.

Earlier, the Panay Electric Company (Peco), power distribution arm of PEDC, estimated power demand at more than 82MW.

Iloilo City is fast becoming an investment and business haven in Western Visayas, luring investments from national and international companies.

By 2015, it is expected that big investors and companies have already established their footholds in the city. (Lydia C. Pendon)
