Power firm ups Binga Dam capacity to 125MW

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Binga hydroelectric plant is now operating at 125 megawatts.

SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet (SNAP-Benguet) received a Certificate of Compliance (COC) from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Monday marking the 25-megawatt (MW) increase of renewable energy supplied to the Luzon grid.

Rhoda Santos, Corporate Communications manager, said all four units of the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) have increased its combined capacity from 100MW in 2008 to 125MW this year.

Snap has been rehabilitating the Binga plant since 2010 and with combined efforts of the engineering team, can increase its capacity to as much as 132MW.

The ERC certificate signifies SNAP-Benguet has complied with the technical, financial, and environmental requirements prescribed in the Revised Rules for the Issuance of COCs for Generation Companies and facilities.

The Binga plant was constructed in the 1960s and required massive upgrades to be able to operate and increase capacity requiring a new intake at higher elevation, new headrace, replacement and modernization of plant control system and replacement of electro-mechanical components.

Emmanuel Rubio, SNAP-Benguet president and CEO, said, “Aside from providing a significant amount of clean and renewable energy to communities, this also means that we will be able to contribute to energy security by adding additional power generation capacity to the grid.”

Binga is the second plant that SNAP-Benguet has rehabilitated to achieve modern, state-of-the-art level under its thrust of operational excellence.

In 2011, the hydro company completed the restoration and upgrading of the Ambuklao HEPP in Bokod, Benguet, transforming the decommissioned 75-MW plant to an operating 105-MW facility.

The increase in capacity translates to a higher generation of power for Luzon as well as trading in the open energy market.
