Organizers limit September 11 anti-pork prayer vigil hours

ORGANIZERS of next week's prayer vigil against the pork barrel fund system will limit the activity's time so as not to snarl traffic in the area.

Edsa Tayo said the vigil will start at 11 a.m. and all programs should end at 4 p.m., as a "traffic management measure."

The September 11 vigil will be held at the Edsa Shrine, which is along a busy stretch of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue.

Several groups have already expressed conviction to join the Edsa rally including businessmen, youth organizations, militant groups, civil society, and the Catholic Church.

The president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, expressed support for the aim of the organizers of the "Edsa Tayo" in convincing the government to abolish the pork barrel system.

In a radio interview, Palma said there is no doubt on the stand of the Church leaders over the ongoing debate on whether the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) should be abolished or not.

"It's very obvious in principle… We want the PDAF to be stopped. Stop and find ways and means to reach out to the poor in many other ways," said Palma over Church-run Radio Veritas.

He said that even the manner by which the people have been manifesting have the approval of the Catholic leaders.

"It's about time that the people manifest their own conviction… Ours is an expression of solidarity," said Palma.

September 11 is a regular working day, unlike August 26, the date of the first anti-pork barrel gathering in Manila. (JK/HDT/Sunnex)
