Leyte supports declaration of September as ‘peace month’

THE Provincial Government of Leyte supported the declaration of September as peace month, after the Provincial Board (PB) passed a resolution urging all local government units in the province to conduct activities or program that would center on promoting peace, like peace forum.

September was declared as the National Peace Consciousness Month, which aims to promote a culture of peace and to raise public awareness and understanding of the comprehensive peace process.

The resolution was authored by Vice Governor Carlo Loreto and supported by members of the PB.

The resolution was also the PB’s response to the current arm struggle happening in Zamboanga that had already taken lives of several government troops, members of the Moro National Liberation Front and ordinary citizens.

Loreto said the Provincial Government must use all its influence in the promotion of peace in the country and condemn the use of arm struggle, and if one is pushing for a better agenda, it should be back with good arguments and not by using armaments.

"Armed conflict is not the solution to the problem that plagues our country," he said.

The 78th Infantry Battalion stationed in the town of Burauen supports the Provincial Government’s move.

Captain Ian Andres Fabellon, civil military officer of the 78th IB, said they support the call, as they have been working to attain lasting peace for the country.

Fabellon added that peace caravan and forums have been done by the military stationed in the province as part of the civic military operation, to encourage more people especially those who are supporting rebels to shift their alliance with the government. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
