Baguio students discover value of reading

SOME 200 students from Pinget, Happy Hollow, Crystal Cave and Pacday Quinio Elementary Schools took part in a storytelling on the theme, "Develop Love for Reading for Lifelong Learning" at the Baguio City Library held September 10 and 13.

The activity is one of the City Government's programs to promote the city as a center of education.

The storytelling project is spearheaded by the Baguio City Library and in collaboration with the Baguio-Benguet Librarians Association Inc. (BBLAI).

Secretary to the Mayor Rafael Tallocoy stressed the importance of library which is a venue to read and learn to be aware of what is happening around the world.

"Develop knowledge through reading," urged Tallocoy. "There is a time to work, a time to play and a time to read."

Radio anchor Reynaldo Ebatados of Z Radio told stories emphasizing the importance of reading so as to inculcate in the young minds of the students.

During the simple activity, the children also participated in the fun games. The Saint Louis University Library Science students also inspired the children through their performances.

Librarian Fe Requilman of the Baguio City Library said that the advocacy of their office is a yearly outreach project to children from different public grade schools by providing events such as storytelling, book talk, puppet show presentation among others.

The children will also have the opportunity to visit the Baguio City library and at the same time give them the chance to experience the joy and the adventure of reading updated children’s books and non-books materials.

This coming November, 500 children from other public grade schools will be experiencing the same storytelling and reading library program and other fun-filled activities in celebration of the National Book Week, revealed Requilman. (Jho Arranz)
