Breast cancer walk turns 10

WITH records of 657 deaths out of the 1,349 cases from 2003-2007, the Cebu population-based Cancer Registry of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi) identified breast cancer as the leading cause of death among Cebuano women.

The fight against the disease affecting the lives of Cebuano women and their families continues in the 10th run of Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness on Oct. 19.

Last year, 3,000 people from various sectors of the Cebuano community supported the annual advocacy walk held every full moon of October in observance of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of Rafi once again calls on the public to take part in this massive awareness campaign, which this year, highlights a walk from Fuente Osmeña Circle to Plaza Independecia. Participants will be in pink costumes.

The walk will be capped with a show featuring Cebuano bands and performers.

Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness is a unique collective advocacy campaign focused on early screening and detection of breast cancer through monthly breast self-examination and mammography, especially for women aged 20 and beyond.

The event is organized by Rafi-EJACC in partnership with the Cebu City Government and the Task Force Cancer of Cebu City. It is also supported by Cebu Cancer Fight Inc., I Can Serve Foundation, She Matters, and Can with God.
