Ex-con killed in police chase

CHILDREN and parents off to school were witnesses to a chase that led to the killing of a man who had served time for drugs in Barangay 25-C in Quezon Boulevard, Davao City on Wednesday morning.

Davao City Police Office’s Investigation and Detection Management Branch (DCPO-IDMB) director Antonio E. Rivera identified the suspect as Fernando B. Lascañas, alias Andot, 42, a resident of Jacinto Street in Barangay 21-C, Davao City.

Rivera, in an interview, said the chase happened along Ponce and Gempesaw Streets in Barangay 25-C near Quezon Boulevard at around 7 a.m.

The suspect was riding a motorcycle with a gun tucked in his waist when hailed by policemen to check on the papers for his gun. Rivera added that they have already been investigating on the suspect following complaints by his neighbors of threats and his penchant to carry a gun.

"Namatikdan namo nga naa siya’y baril. Mao to amo siya gipara aron unta istoryahon, unya kay nag pasirit man siya ug dagan nuon sa iyang motor mao tung gi-gukod namo (We noticed the gun tucked in his waist and so we hailed him to talk with him, but he sped off, and so we chased him)," Rivera said.

The suspect allegedly fired at them twice, and so the police shot back. Lascañas was hit twice in the body and four in the head. The cadaver was brought to Angel Funeral Homes.

Further investigation showed that the suspect was convicted for violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 with one Zaldy Verano.

Rivera added that the suspect was also the one who shot a certain Senior Police Officer 2 Danny Daquigan last September 6.

Recovered from the possession of the suspect were one Colt MK14 .45 caliber pistol with six live ammunitions, a spare magazine, and seven live ammunitions.

Police also recovered from the crime scene four empty shells of caliber .45 pistol and a holster.
