Oro Chamber to hold job fair

TO HELP address the unemployment in Misamis Oriental, the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Oro Chamber) will hold a job fair and product exhibition on October 11 to 13.

The activity, titled “Oro Best Expo and Mini Job Fair 2013,” will highlight various handicraft products from Salay, Misamis Oriental and other areas in Northern Mindanao.

In an e-mailed announcement, Oro Chamber will also conduct forums regarding financing, livelihood, and wellness during said dates.

The expo and job fair will give scholarship grants from different colleges and universities in Cagayan de Oro to students, including the Capitol University, AMA Computer University, and Southern Philippines College.

Mayor Oscar Moreno will preside the opening of the stakeholder’s forum.

Unemployment rate worst in SE Asia

Meanwhile, an article in the InterAksyon.com said unemployment and underemployment rate will remain at 12.4 million by the time President Benigno Aquino III leaves office in 2016, even if the Philippine economy will rise at a mean of 7 percent every year.

In the same article, only one out of four new jobseekers will most probably find a good job, which means that only 240,000 of 500,000 college graduates will land on the formal sector.

Out of 240,000 in the formal sector, 52,000 of them will land in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

Also, 20,000 of them will be absorbed by the manufacturing sector.

“The country's unemployment rate slightly increased to 7.3 percent in July 2013 from 7 percent in the same period last year,” a Sept. 11 news posted in news.yahoo.com read.

On the same website, socio-economic planning secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the pool of unemployed individuals comes from young people who lack experience and competency.

In a labor survey conducted by the National Statistics Office, the count of salary workers escalated by 1.6 percent, and the number of unpaid family workers increased by 6.4 percent in July 2013 in comparison to July 2012’s data.

According to Ibon Foundation, Inc., the Philippine unemployment rate based on their survey is the worst in Southeast Asia.

Ibon said the crisis of unemployment will remain unresolved if no genuine push to develop the Filipino manufacturing and agriculture.
