‘Apocalypse’ run

IT WAS a scene culled right out of Hollywood movie -- people are running away from the humans who were infected by an unknown virus, turning them into feral creatures, their flesh are rotting, their hunger for human flesh is like a bottomless pit that cannot be sated.

At least, this is how the organizers of Apocalypse Philippines, KO production envisioned their fun run on October 26 in Las Ramblas in SM, the city’s first experience in monster–chase fun run.

Christopher Liao of KO Production said that the run, a pre-Halloween event hopes to put ‘fun’ in the fun run.

Liao said that the uniqueness of their fun run was inspired by zombie-themed movies and games owing to its popularity these recent years.

There was the runaway hit The Walking Dead, which TV viewers across the globe is eagerly waiting for its fourth season.

And then there was World War Z, a zombie movie of different kind –- zombies are not nimble and slow but are fast and vicious.

And then there’s the romantic-comedy zombie movie Warm Bodies –- a movie told from the point of view of the zombie ‘R’ who fell in love with the movie’s heroine.

And KO Production is quick to draw inspiration from both movies –- they shared that in their fun run, zombies will be released in a series of waves, and their movement will be from ssssslllllooowwww to quite fast, as in the movie WWZ.

“But the zombie cannot harass the runners,” Liao said.

Liao stressed that the runners will be given two ‘life threads’ that zombies will try to ‘steal.’

The objective of the run really is to play that chase part in the movies, lose the thread to the zombies and your chances to win the grand prize slim down.

Liao added that they have designated ‘sanctuary areas’ instead of checkpoints.

In the ‘sanctuary areas’ the runners cannot be attacked by the zombies and those who have lost their thread of life can purchase another to get their chances back in winning the grand prize.

“It’s like a game really, we need to emphasize on the ‘Fun’ and not on the run,” says Liao.

Liao added that those who don’t want to join the run can also join as a zombie which doesn’t require registration fees.

Liao hopes that the total number of runners will be equaled with zombies half the total number of runners.

“Like if there are 200 runners, there will be 100 zombies to be deployed to go after the runners,” Liao added.

Liao also added that the secret stashes are also scattered across the 5 kilometer race route in the posh enclave of Pueblo de Oro.

As the run will be held after sunset, the atmosphere of dark alleys will add to the hysteria of the run as one will never know where the zombies will pop out.

Liao also added that the run will benefit the Happy Soles Foundation, a child-centric organization that funds early childhood education.

“Not only this is a fun run, it will also benefit the children under the Happy Soles Foundation,” Liao added.

Liao is challenging everyone who has the guts to have fun and help the children on October 26 and register for the run at Dunkin Donuts Divisoria.

The P200 registration for running will include a bib and a kit while the P400 registration will include the jersey.
