Police nab 6 fishermen

SIX people were arrested for illegal fishing by police forces off shore Zamboanga del Sur province, the police reported.

Arrested were Edwin Estrada, 40; Welnar Llanes, 18; Fernando Tambus, 30; Roel Tempad, 34; Greggy Dingal, 22; and, Darwin Estrada, 20 all fishermen and residents of Igat Island, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.

Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca said they were arrested around 5:30 a.m. by joint elements of Vicenzo Sagun, Lapuyan, Margosatubig, and Kumalarang Municipal Police Stations all of Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office.

Huesca said the policemen were conducting seaborne patrol when they chanced upon the six fishermen fishing inside the fish sanctuary with the use of fine fish net, which is a violation of Margosatubig Municipal Ordinance Number 01-98.

Huesca said the police forces of the four towns joined forces to conduct seaborne patrol following reports about rampant illegal fishing within their adjoining municipal waters.

The conduct of the joint patrol resulted to the arrest of the six fishermen, Huesca said.
