Provincial gov’t could save from judges' allowances

THE Negros Occidental government could save some thousands of pesos if the Supreme Court decides to prohibit judges from receiving allowances from local government units (LGU).

Enrique Pinongan, provincial administrator, confirmed on Wednesday that about 20 judges from the Regional Trial Court all over the province receive P5,000 each every month from the Capitol.

Aside from the judges, the prosecutors are also receiving P2,000 each as allowance from the province. It has been a long practice that is allowed under Commission on Audit rules.

Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno is pushing to prohibit judges from receiving allowances from LGUs.

Pinongan said the judges' allowances started from P2,000 each every month in previous years, and has been increasing until it reached P5,000 each every month.

The total, he said, is also about P100,000 every month.
