Golf: Remembering Tony Garcia

TODAY, October 4, is the second death anniversary of my father, the late Antonio ‘Tonygars’ Monteverde Garcia. I remember that day very well. I was in Palos Verdes practicing for the PAL Ladies Interclub Golf Tournament. It was in the afternoon, it was raining, my clothes were wet, and I was in the farthest part of the golf course. I received a call from my mom. She was crying and she said that my father had gone into in a coma.

I rushed back to the clubhouse. I drove home quickly. The traffic was very bad. I had my headlights on and my emergency lights blinking, but still, it took me around 30 minutes to reach home. I ran to my dad’s room still wearing my dirty golf shoes and wet clothes. He was in bed, lifeless.

I knelt by his side and held his hand. I started to cry again. They say that hearing is the last to go. I spoke to him. His hand was still warm. And I said ‘I love you Daddy.’ And then I just kept quiet as I watched him.

He used to have a catheter bag that needed changing every few days. I would do it for him. He would call me and tell me to come over to change it. I did not mind the mess. I would cut his fingernails and toenails too. I would go there, do my routine, and then we would have breakfast from McDonalds. I really miss you, Daddy.

My dad, the late Tony Garcia, will forever be remembered in the world of golf in Davao. For those who are interested, there will be a mass for him at the Redemptorist Church at 5.30 p.m. today, October 4.
