22 firms charged, fined for substandard products

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Davao Region reported a total of 22 establishments in the city that were formally charged and penalized for not keeping up with product standards.

DTI-Davao Region director Teololo T. Pasawa said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao that 12 of these establishments were fornally charged while 10 others have already been penalized.

He said these establishments were selling substandard construction materials, electrical equipments, helmets, lighters, and ceramic tiles.

Pasawa said that when their monitoring team found out that these establishments have been violating the products' prescribed quality standards, they issued a show cause order wherein they will be given three to five days to explain.

If their explanations are unfounded, they were then formally charged.

"We also have confiscated their products and brought it to the safehouse for safe keeping and will be used as evidence. Once the case is resolved, these products are then destroyed," said Pasawa.

As one of their initiatives to educate the public on genuine and fake or substandard products, DTI will have a roving exhibit on these products as part of their Consumers Welfare Month Celebration.

Rachel Remetio, head of the Consumer Welfare and Trade Regulation Division of DTI-Davao, told reporters last September 25 that they will be bringing in manufacturers, distributers, and suplliers to educate the public on the differences between genuine and fake products.

Pasawa said that they will be bringing the exhibit througout the region in areas like Davao City, Tagum City, Mati City, and the municipality of Nabunturan.

Aside from the roving exhibit, DTI is also conducting consumer education seminars and partnered with local media outlets to make consumers aware of product standards.

This year's consumer welfare month theme is "Health Products' Quality, Efficacy, Safety, and Transparency... Everybody's Concern." Other than the DTI, the Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration are also leading this year's celebration.
