P25 million needed to light up Athletic Bowl

AT LEAST P25 million will be needed to install the lighting for the Baguio Athletic Bowl, based on an estimate by the Department of Public Works and Highways-Baguio City District Engineering Office.

About P20 million will go to installing four giant floodlights, which must meet Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) specifications.

PSC architect Noel Elnar, who inspected the sports facility recently, said each floodlight must produce at least than 750 lumens (lm). “If not this will not be enough to properly light the entire area,” Elnar said.

He said the standard brightness for international stadiums is 1,200 lm. The 750 lm is only appropriate for Philippine-sanctioned events.

Apart from the illumination requirement Elnar counseled the tower lamps or post must be above 25 meters in height.

The PSC also agreed with the DPWH’s plan to use natural grass for the oval.

The Swiss importer of the oval’s rubberized track had offered to provide artificial grass.

“As much as possible natural grass talaga ang gusto natin and according sa PSC it is better. In addition kung artificial na grass ang ilalagay diyan another kind ulit ng expenses yun,” Castañeda said. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
