‘Pedrito’ raises funds to help Visayas quake victims

IF ONLY he is still alive, St. Pedro Calungsod would have spearheaded efforts to help victims of the magnitude-7.2 earthquake in his hometown of Visayas.

This is the belief of Church-based youth group, Youth Pinoy, saying they are confident that the second Filipino saint would not think twice in also helping rebuild the centuries-old churches destroyed by the earthquake.

"We, in Youth Pinoy, believe that St. Pedro Calungsod is telling us to help his 'kababayans' by helping rebuild the Church there, by which we mean not only the structures but the hearts of the people and their faith in God," said Youth Pinoy officer-in-charge April Frances Ortigas in a statement.

On Tuesday, a magnitude-7.2 earthquake hit the Visayas region causing destruction of buildings, hospitals, churches, roads, and bridges, especially in Bohol and Cebu.

And in a bid to help the Pinoy saint realize this, Ortigas said their organization has decided to re-launch the limited-edition "Pedrito Dolls," which was first launched a year ago during his October 21 canonization to help promote awareness about him.

"We can be little saints in our own ways. Through these Pedrito Dolls, we are helping propagate the life and example of St. Pedro and also help rebuild the Church in the Visayas," said Ortigas.

Still to be sold at P650, the Youth Pinoy said P100 will be donated to Church-led relief and restoration operations in Bohol and Cebu for every Pedrito Doll that will be sold.
