Yolanda out of PAR, heads toward Vietnam

MANILA (Updated) -- Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Saturday between 1 to 2 p.m., state weather forecasters said.

As of 3 p.m. Saturday, Yolanda’s eye was located 722 kilometers (km) west of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. It intensified slightly and packed winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the strongest typhoon this year is forecast to move west northwest at 35 kph.

US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said that Yolanda is expected to weaken further as it heads toward Vietnam.

Public warning signal elsewhere have been lowered.

Yolanda hit the land six times on Friday as it hopped from island to island of Visayas. It first made landfall at 4:40 a.m. over Guiuan, Samar and last at Busuanga in Palawan later that day.
