THE damage brought by Typhoon Yolanda (international codename: Haiyan) that hit Visayas last week is now placed at P4 billion, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Thursday.

More than 71,700 hectares of agricultural land were affected by Yolanda with P 2.2-billion worth of rice crops had been destroyed. Damage to the fishing industry is pegged at P1.1-billion, the disaster council said.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the killer typhoon now stands at 2,375. Seventy-seven persons remain missing while 3,853 were reported injured.

"Kinukuha namin yung tamang data, tamang bilang [ng mga casualties] para official," NDRRMC Administrator Undersecretary Eduardo del Rosario said.

Around eight million individuals or 1.73-million families have been affected with more than 236,989 houses reportedly destroyed.

Power outages are still being experience in parts of Regions 4-B (Mimaropa), 5 (Bicol Region), 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas) while total power blackout is reported in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas).

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said Smart Communications and Globe Telecoms have restored their services in Aklan (88 percent), Antique (94 percent), Capiz (64 percent), Iloilo (89 percent, Negros Occidental (94 percent) and Guimaras (100 percent).

Del Rosario said that around 2,000 additional troops have been deployed in Eastern Visayas for the security as well as the ongoing relief and humanitarian operations for the victims of the super typhoon.

"Hinde lang security ang ginagawa na ating mga sundalo, pati debris cleaning," Del Rosario said.

He added that they are already moving on areas where the local government units are no longer functioning and noted that the Department of Interior and Local Government already made contact with each local chief executive in the Eastern Visayas region.

Del Rosario added that land travel from Manila to Tacloban is now open as well as Tacloban to any parts of Mindanao.

"Manila going Tacloban City and Tacloban going to Mindanao ay bukas na," Del Rosario said. (Sunnex)
