Principal dies in Carcar road accident

A PRIVATE school official died while her husband was injured in a vehicular accident in Barangay Perrelos, Carcar City yesterday morning.

Police identified the fatality as Soledad Aliño, the principal of Carcar Academy.

Aliño, who was in her 60s, was rushed to Carcar City Provincial Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival by the attending doctor.

She succumbed to injuries in the different parts of her body.

Her husband Eleuterio, also in his 60s, survived the incident. He is now confined in a private hospital in Cebu City, according to investigator SPO2 Irving Avila.

Before the incident happened past 6 a.m., the couple attended a mass at the Theotokos Shrine in Perrelos.

Afterwards, they boarded the motorcycle driven by Eleuterio.

They were traveling toward Carcar Academy to attend the intramurals when they were hit by the bus of St. Catherine’s College, which is also in Carcar City.

The bus was driven by Catalino Manayaga, 47, a resident of Barangay Tuyom, Carcar City.

Manayaga told Avila that he was driving toward San Fernando to fetch students.

When he overtook a minibus, he hit the Aliños who were on the opposite lane.

The victims were thrown about eight meters from the point of impact.

Manayaga told Avila that he did not see the victims when he maneuvered the bus to the opposite lane.

He surrendered to the police, who are waiting for the victims’ family to press charges against him.

Carcar Academy’s officials and students were saddened by Aliño’s sudden passing.

She was “our teacher, mentor, spiritual adviser, principal and a friend,” said Lorena Alesna Skanstrom.
