Murillo: The heart speaks of kindness

OVERWHELMING is the word to describe the generosity that nations around the world have manifested towards our country. God's hand must be with all of them for their hearts overflow with kindness and fill the Filipinos' heart with joy in their giving. I hope and wish that this reaching out will continue not only for our country but also for other nations in the same difficult situation as the Philippines. All these beautiful acts of kindness and reaching out are images of a world strengthened by friendship and brotherhood .If these could only be sustained permanently, if only all the cracks and crevices in broken and nearly broken relationships could be sealed again by kindness, what a wonderful world this would be.

Of course the Yolanda catastrophe takes on a magnitude like no other, wrecking lives and property beyond expectation, and being such, becomes an extraordinary tragedy staring at humanity. Since it is out of the ordinary, the gestures of kindness and generosity are also extraordinary. For this giant step of sharing and reaching out, a deep sense of gratitude and joy overcome each one of us. Thank you to the nations of the world that have come to our people's rescue and relief. May God bless your nations twice over!

We only hope and pray that kindnesses given will not be abused and make some of our victims dependent on relief. To become dependent on dole outs makes people lazy. They learn to become helpless and useless to a society that needs functional and useful citizens. This is not to negate nor denigrate people who don't work at all for a living. There are exceptions too and we know which these are. The disabled find it difficult to land a permanent job, but depending on the disability, many of them still make their strong presence felt in the working world. They are relentless workers. The blind masseurs, the accountants and engineers on wheels. Even the mentally challenged up to a certain degree, can still earn a living for themselves and their families.

This will be no easy task though for the victims who up to this moment are still starting to rise on their feet and out of their troubled and traumatic experiences. Neither will this be easy on our government which is saddled now by so many issues. We have to remember though that priority must be given to those in direst need. So, each one of us, not only our government has a job to do. We have to help out in our own individual ways. Like our youth today: uplifting are their projects in schools directed at helping the victims. Our young have learned much from their forebears' experiences. They have taken the right steps towards humaneness.

Let's help people through kindness. It breeds honesty, it creates integrity and most of all, it prevents crimes of the body, the mind and the spirit!
