Duterte swears in village execs in mass oath-taking

MORE than a thousand barangay officials attended the mass oathtaking at Almendras Gym in Davao City on Friday presided by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who heads the local political party Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod.

In his speech, Duterte urged the newly elected officials to move forward and leave politics behind. He urged them to prioritize their constituents over their personal whims.

Thus, Duterte said, he is prohibiting any barangay official from holding Lakbay Aral from now on. The mayor said money spent in travels outside Davao City is better spent for food and medicines for the people.

Among those who attended the oathtaking were former city councilor and now Matina Crossing barangay captain Angela Librado-Trinidad and Catalunan Grande village chief January Duterte, wife of Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte.

Incumbent Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president Edgar Ibuyan Jr. said they will soon be electing their new set of officers. He said one of the strongest contenders for the ABC presidency is January Duterte.

Mayor Duterte, meanwhile, said it is up to the barangay captains to elect their ABC president.

Vice Mayor Duterte earlier said that he does not want his wife to run for the ABC presidency as she is still a neophyte. He said over the weekend though that he will respect whatever decision the ABC would make.

If ever January Duterte would be selected as the ABC president, she will then sit as representative in the City Council, which her husband heads.
