TWO major transport organizations in Iloilo City are clashing against each other over the City Council’s decision to pick Councilor RLeone Geroche as the new committee on transportation chair, replacing Councilor Plaridel Nava.
The City Loop Integrated Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (Cliajoda) Inc. said the council’s choice will hopefully bring reforms and better performance in the transport sector.
But the city loop transport organizations aligned with Iloilo City Loop Alliance Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (Iclajoda) are asking the council to reconsider its decision, saying it was only Nava who championed their cause by sponsoring various ordinances that strengthened the public transportation sector in the city.
They said Nava is a hardworking and performing councilor and even goes out of his way to help direct traffic and dissolve traffic congestion.
But the Cliajoda said that Nava must be investigated for his signature on about 100 temporary operator’s permit (TOP) violations of drivers apprehended by members of the Traffic Management and Transport Regulation Office.
Rizalito Alido, secretary of Cliajoda, said only the city mayor was given the privilege to sign the TOP of erring drivers without paying penalties. Thus, Nava must be investigated for usurping the powers of the city mayor.
Alido and Cliajoda president Jeffry Casiano said their organization is not recognized by the City Council’s transport committee formerly under Nava.
They also said that Boyet Parcon, president of Iclajoda, and two of his cohorts are working as fixers for erring drivers by charging P50 to P100 each TOP.
They said it is about time for the transport sector to be reformed and cleaned.
