20 families move to tent city

TWENTY families from Tinago Sports Complex will transfer to the tent city today after the Philippine Red Cross and Cebu City Government finished installing the facility at the South Road Properties (SRP).

Earlier, 38 families signified to transfer, but the list was cut to 20 after some of them decided to go home before Christmas.

They are the families from Eastern Visayas who evacuated and temporarily stayed in Cebu after typhoon Yolanda caused devastation to their place.

Former city councilor Jocelyn Pesquera, who is one of the members of the newly formed evacuation committee, said they already made final inspection of the area.

Pesquera said they already allowed those who have secured tickets and are already bound to travel back to their places to stay at the Tinago Sports Complex.

“It will be easier for them to stay in Tinago because it is nearer the pier,” said Pesquera.

SRP Management Office Chief Roberto Varquez said the facility is not 100 percent ready, but can now accommodate the families.

He said only minor electrical wiring and connections are needed to be installed in the area.

Aside from this, Varquez said everything is ready for occupancy. Water and electric supply has also been installed.

Pesquera said the city will help the transients find a livelihood or a job as they stay in the tent city.

“We need to help them find a living,” said Pesquera.

Since the tent city can accommodate 50 families, the city will also allow home-based transients to avail themselves of the facility.

Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) records show that there are still 528 families or 3,000 individuals that are home-based.

A mass and a short program will be held at the SRP as the facility officially opens today.
