ANTICIPATION was high as of late Tuesday afternoon as villages have started bringing in their party horns for the first-ever “Torotot Festival” along Davao City’s Roxas Avenue where prizes are at stake for the most unusual and the biggest ones.
Among the early birds were Krystel Salinas and the 20-foot horn of Barangay 31-D. While barangay 9-A’s entry is made by Rogelio Baldonado.
More torotots (horns) were arriving late afternoon as residents who enlisted to try to break the Guiness Book of World Record for party horn blowing in one venue were already starting to claim their party horns from the organizers.
The crowd was beginning to grow in numbers by 3:30 p.m. along Roxas Avenue, everyone asking where they can claim their torotots that are machine-readable for registration.
The Torotot Festival is organized by Smart Communication to put in more festivity in New Year’s celebration amid Davao city’s pyrotechnic ban since 2002.
It aims to gather at least 10,000 party horn blowers to top Japan’s record of 6,900.
"This will be the first in Davao and the Philippines," Smart regional sales manager for South Mindanao Arnold P. Dellosa said in an earlier press forum.
The stretch of Roxas from the junction of C.M. Recto to Padre Faura St. (ALU Building) was cordoned off as early as Tuesday afternoon.
The barangay with the largest torotot contingent will get P50,000 and more prizes awaited the most creative torotots.
