Battle of legends

THE Philippines’s best billiard player Efren “The Magician” Reyes will renew his rivalry with American Earl “The Pearl” Strickland in a sequel of a greatest billiard showdown that started 18 years ago next week.

On Jan. 14 and 15, Reyes and Strickland, two of the biggest names in billiards, will once again try to outdo each other in a duel in a pay-per-view match dubbed as the “Battle of the Legends” that will be held in Steinway Billiards in Astoria, New York, USA.

The first time Reyes and Strickland met was in 1996 in Hong Kong, where Reyes defeated Strickland after overhauling a 100-109 deficit to a 120-117 win in the race to 120 match.

That victory earned Reyes the winner-take-all prize of $100,000.

This time, the two billiards Hall of Famers will engage in a shootout of 8-Ball, 9-Ball and 10-Ball, Race to 17 contest.

To make sure that the two masters will have enough motivation, the winner of each set will get a cash prize of $3,000.

The event is organized by Steinway Café and Billiards in conjunction with London Bridge Promotions.

The game format will be alternate break in all disciplines, call safe and call shot.

In the 9-Ball and 10-Ball the 9 and 10 balls must be the last ball to fall. However, the 9 and 10 balls may be pocketed any time during the game by a combination or carom, but must be re-spotted immediately without loss of turn at the table.
