‘Closing in’

MANILA—Globalport Batang Pier held Alaska Aces to only six points in overtime to carve a 91-88 win and earn a playoff for the last quarterfinal berth in the 39th PBA Philippine Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum.

Kelly Nabong, a 17th overall pick by Meralco in 2012, played a heroic role when he completed two free throws off a foul by JV Casio with only 1.4 seconds remaining.

The 6’7” center, filling up the void left by the injured Jay Washington, likewise scored on a difficult drive with only 14.6 seconds left in the regulation period that sent the game into overtime.

“At least we were able to bounce back. We talked about being consistent. We competed but we were not consistent. Kelly Nabong was able to step up, his passion in the game is really awesome,” said Globalport coach Ticzon.

But all is not yet lost for the Aces, who dropped to a 4-9 win-loss slate. They need to win their against Barako Bull and pray Globalport losses its final match or either Barako Bull, San Mig Coffee and Meralco drop their last two matches.
