Unsolved crimes

If you are a motorist, and it so happened you are in Angeles City, and from the south side of the city you want to cross the Abacan bridge via the Magalang road on your way to the city hall or Marquee Mall, try to skip it if you can. The stretch portion of that road is being widened, and you can always expect bumper to bumper situation almost anytime.

General Alan Purisima may not have the good looks of Nick Bartolome or Avelino 'Sonny' Razon, former chiefs of Philippine National Police , but he is nice, kind and well meaning. In few instances General Alan dropped for fellowship at the Monday Club,(Monday Club is a fellowship group of more than fifty which meets regularly every Monday at the Ribeye Steak House Restaurant) the members were always glad to welcome him.

In a press statement issued recently he exhorted his field commanders to 'put more criminals in jail.'

'Let us vigorously pursue the investigation and solutions of cases,'he added. It brought to mind the several crimes committed in Angeles City in recent years, notably the massacre of a family in L&S Subdivision in Barangay Sto. Domingo, the killing of Barangay Captain Efren De La Cruz and the Tetangco and Yap case. Until and unless the perpetrators are behind bars, the crime remains unsolved. Will they just be consigned in cold cases file?

Before the recess of the Angeles City council last December last year, the councilors in a caucus decided to include in their agenda the invitation to heads of department of the city government in order to get updates from each.

It will work both ways. It will afford the department heads a venue to report their accomplishments, and on the other hand it will give opportunity to members of the city council to make queries or even follow ups in a formal recorded forum on issues like garbage problem, criminality, traffic and other concerns.

The maverick Lito Ganzon is back as member of the Angeles City Council. He made two unsuccessful runs, yet was able to bounce back, got elected Barangay Captain of Anunas and ultimately got the nod of his peers and was elected president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC). He now represents the ABC in the city council.

We were both elected councilors in 1988 and we run in tandem in 1998, me as mayor and he was my vice. We failed. No regrets.

Also expressing no regret is my friend Pulung Maragul Barangay Captain Jojo Dimapilis who made his exit as the ABC representative in the council this year. He served well his stint as a member of the city council.

Thank God there is the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and there is Rene Romero who has a wide vision for improvement. The business group proposes measures otherwise overlooked by local officials. The call of making Jose Abad Santos Avenue 'hazard free' is indeed timely.

Passenger buses and jeepneys made use as 'terminal' the area below the pedestrian overpass fronting McDonalds, thus putting a lot of people in danger. Traffic enforcers are looking the other way. And aside from the Jasa highway there are so many traffic problem areas where the presence of traffic enforcers is necessary. The whole stretch of MacArthur Highway from Telebastagan to Dolores should also be made hazard free.
