Cantonjos tops chess tourney

AIRFORCE man Allan Cantonjos did it again.

Fresh from winning the QAB-CDO blitz tourney here at the Capitol Chess Park, the Gingoog City pride Cantonjos unleashed his chess fury anew in the 2014 Araw Ng Misamis Oriental “Kuyamis Festival” Chess Tournament concluded recently at same venue.

Cantonjos, who defeated National Master Rustum Tolentino in the QAB blitz final showdown, considered his Round 5 victory against Balingasag ace Paul Jardin as his badge for another crowning glory.

“Wala na kaayo ko na pressure heading to the final round against Viking (Joseph Abne) after nidaug ko kang Paul nga highly-respected veteran sa chess,” said Cantonjos as he went on to pocket the P7,000 top purse.

Cantonjos quickly attributed his success to the unwavering support of his generous superior Lt. Col. Bienvenido J. Casaclang, PAF TOG-10 Commander at Lumbia Airport as well as honorable Mayor Marie L. Guingona of Gingoog City.

It was actually a double-whammy for Gingoog cause as Cantonjos’ younger brother Abner bagged the second prize worth P5,000. Abne’s son, Viking Jr. and Junjun Tisukan occupied third and fourth places, respectively. They got P3,000 and P2,000 each also with trophies.

Rounding up the money circle were Eutemio Coquilla, Starsky Maestrado and Jardin.

Arbiter Jun Cuizon said the Kuyamis Chess Festival was exclusive only for players who are bonafide residents of Misamis Oriental.
