Education reform council eyed

A COUNCIL will be created to lead education reforms in Iloilo City and nearby areas through a memorandum of agreement between an advocate group and an economic development foundation.

The Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) and the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (ILEDF) signed an agreement to establish the Industry, Academe and Government (IAG) council for the city and province of Iloilo.

One of the goals of the council is to implement a three to five years education reform to increase industry involvement of the academe, through raising the faculty standards, among others.

The council will also improve access to local higher education sector and improve its governance.

The creation of the council is also part of the Higher Education Productivity (HEP) project that seeks initiatives in addressing job mismatch and skills gaps in the City.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAid) also held its continuing IAG dialogues among stakeholders not only in Iloilo City but also in the cities of Batangas and Cagayan de Oro.

The move is also in response to the result of a research on the state of higher education in the city and province of Iloilo. Ella Antonio of Brain Trust Inc. presented the research that showed the skills gap between the resource needs of industries and the current output of local higher education stakeholders.

President Dr. Chito Salazar of UI-Phinma represented PBEd and ILEDF was represented by President Narzalina Lim.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, ILEDF Trustee Marisa Segovia and USAid Philippines chief of the Office Education Robert Burch also witnessed the signing.
