EYE: Amid all the parties, rituals of faith

THE annual Sinulog that brings hundreds of thousands to Cebu has a quiet side. It’s rarely the side that gets promoted in tourism brochures, but it is kept alive by the promises of individuals and households.

More than a flurry of parties and events, the Sinulog endures as a time of whispered prayers, of petitions and thanksgiving. It is faith, celebrated.

THE ORIGINAL SINULOG. A fluvial procession on the eve of the fiesta brings the images of the Child and Our Lady of Guadalupe to Cebu City from Mandaue, for a procession that winds its way across the heart of the city and into the hearts of thousands of devotees.
