ONE hundred ten personnel of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) yesterday received brand new Glock 17 pistols during the turnover rites led by Senior Supt. Edgardo Ordaniel, acting city police director.

Ordaniel said the firearms were distributed to policemen with the rank of Police Officers 1 and 2.

He said that last year, about 50 members of BCPO who don’t have guns received firearms after they passed the proficiency examination test conducted at the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office.

Ordaniel noted this is now the second distribution of firearms to the members of the BCPO, which received already 160 firearms from the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas recently said that in line with President Benigno S. Aquino III administration’s war against criminality, the DILG has taken a concrete step to increase police visibility and mobility and enhance their crime fighting ability.

The PNP ordered about 65,000 brand new Glock 17 pistols which will be distributed to some 60,000 policemen who have no guns yet.

Ordaniel said they have a remaining stock of 90 Glock-17 pistols which will be distributed to policemen who will soon be assigned to the BCPO.

However, they should also pass the proficiency examination test, he added.

He said every week, they will check the firearms to ensure that the policemen possessing them will not pawn their guns.
