Tuba conducts climate change seminar for village chiefs

TUBA, Benguet -- Barangay chairmen of this town and other stakeholders were oriented on Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) here last week by the local government of Tuba through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO).

Clarita Lardizabal, Environmental Specialist 1 and the MDRRMO-designate, said that the activity was aimed to provide a venue for various stakeholders to engage in a productive planning workshop to come up with a doable climate Change Adaptation plan which will respond to the protection of water sources and ensure food sustainability, among others as a response to serve and formidable changes of weather and climate patterns.

Topics discussed included Republic 9729 otherwise known as ‘An Act mainstreaming climate change into government policy formulations, establishing the framework strategy and program on climate change, creating for this purpose the climate change commission, and for other purposes”; mainstreaming of the Climate Change Adaptation into local Development Plans/ Sectoral Vulnerability Assessment, Waste Management, Presentation of Different Hazard Maps that includes Family guideline during Disasters, Ecological and environmental Sustainability through Barangay Governance Performance Management System ( BGPMS) Approach.

Also discussed were climate change impacts on health, agriculture, forest, water resource, impact on upland areas, and impact on species and natural areas that include the flora and fauna of wildlife in the municipality.

Action planning workshop was also done for the formulation of Tuba Climate Change Plan 2013-2016 and the thirteen barangays. (Sonny Cosme)
