THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MBG) in Zamboanga Peninsula is targeting to complete at least 45 geohazard maps this year.
MGB-Zamboanga Peninsula Officer-in-Charge Vheina Marie Quintana said the geohazard maps they are producing at present are with a scale of 1:10,000.
Quintana said her office started the geohazard mapping of the region in 2011 and is targeting to complete the maps this year.
The geohazard maps contain the areas prone to disaster like flashflood and landslide, according to Quintana.
The MGB gives copies of the geohazard maps to the local government units (LGUs) accompanied by their recommendations and mitigating measures, since it serves as guide for disaster preparedness.
In 2013, the MGB-Zamboanga Peninsula completed the geohazard maps for the municipalities of Tambulig and Ramon Magsaysay, Zamboanga del Sur; Polanco, Salug, Tampilisan and Godod, Zamboanga del Norte; and, Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay. (Bong Garcia)
