Abahan lands 3rd in Subic Marathon

SANDI Abahan continues to trail blaze in long distance running by landing at the podium in the recent Subic International Marathon 2014 in Remy Field, Subic Freeport Zone, Zambales recently.

Fresh from her second place finish in the 42K Cebu City Marathon last January 12, Abahan snatched her second medal this year by hauling a bronze medal in the women’s 21K.

“Masaya ako to land within the top three ng competition, siguro nasa roll pa ng momentum after manalo sa Cebu two weeks earlier,” Abahan said.

Abahan finished in 1:36 minutes, just seconds behind Philippine team member Mary Grace Delos Santos, who finished in the second place. A Kenyan runner took the first place spot.

“Last year natapos ako as first placer sa 5K, siguro nakita ng mga sponsors ko na kailangan itaas ang level so they encouraged me na sa 21K sumali this year, so far meron namang magandang result,” Abahan quipped.

Abahan who used to run short distance races, said long distance running competitions has brought out the best in her running career.

“I’m looking towards improving yung mga level ng running competition na nasasalihan ko pati narin sa mga exercise,” Abahan said.

The 23 year-old BS Education student from the University of the Cordilleras was also the champion in last year’s 5K women’s event in the same Subic International Marathon.

“Naghahanda rin kasi ako para sa mga iba pang upcoming running events depende schedule,” Abahan added.

Abahan said she is now preparing for the upcoming Pilipinas Akyathlon on February 8 in Tinongdan, Itogon, Benguet.

“Yung sa akyathlon naman iba ulit ang expectations natin doon, medyo ang trail pataas and marami ulit international runners na kasali so chances are mahirap pero susubukan natin,” Abahan closed.
