6 Oro schools face off in newscasting tilt

SIX participating schools with four participants each joined the first Inter-school Newscasting Competition of ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao at Ayala Centrio last February 2.

ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao, together with some its sponsors, organized the said competition to finally bring into fruition this long time project.

Prior to the contest proper, the audience and the contestants got a free seminar on television news writing by ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao.

Afterward, participants were tasked to make news out from the situation given and translated it to English and two other dialects – Tagalog and Visayan or Cebuano.

The contestants were given an hour to compose their story in three different languages. It was followed by a 15-minute break before the competition started.

The competition required the contestants to report in English, Tagalog and Visayan or Cebuano for the first, second and third rounds, respectively.

The participants were divided into four batches with six different representatives from each school.

The participants are students of Technology Communication Management, Development Communication and Mass Communication from various schools in the city.

The six contending schools are Xavier University (XU), Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), Liceo de Cagayan University (LDCU), Cagayan de Oro College (COC), Lourdes College (LC) and Pilgrim Christian College (PCC)

All of them were tasked to report on Tropical Storm “Basyang” that hit the city over the weekend.

In between the rounds, there were trivia games played and MAGTV Na, Asenso Ta host Bryan Yu rendered two songs.

Only one was chosen to represent each school, hence six contenders are going to face off in the final rounds at Centrio activity center on February 23, 2014.

Angielyn Siwagan (MUST), Hamilcar Chanjueco (XU), Trevi Espinosa (COC), Bonne Zalzos (LDCU), Deonie Balingan (LC), Destine Lanzaderas (PCC) emerged as the winners of the semis.

The event was judged by Gean Tulang-Cesar of Parasat Cable TV, Trini Velasco, news desk editor of ABS–CBN Northern Mindanao and Grace Cantal-Albasin, the editor in chief of Sun*Star Cagayan de Oro. (Alyssa C. Clenuar MUST Intern)
