Young glamour

PROM. The mere mention of it can get a teenager running around in excitement. You can blame it on teen flicks that have romanticized it, but though it is often exaggerated on screen, prom is still one of the momentous occasions in life.

Nothing quite compares to the thrills of inviting a date, making bets on who’s going to be prom queen, and of course, the ladies’ favorite part of it: getting the chance to dress up.

Now there’s no need to worry about looking glamorous come prom night, says stylist Alexa Martin. Her first recommendation is to choose gowns in jewel tones. “It’s always in style when it comes to formal dressing. It flatters most skin tones and make the wearer look chic and sophisticated,” she said.

Daring wearers can go for bold hues like sapphire blue; for instance, this flowing chiffon piece, which is an eye-catching piece on its own. It requires minimal accessories, and Alexa simply accented it with a white textured clutch and gold diamante bracelets.

For the less audacious, tamer shades like emerald green will do the trick. Alexa said that those who prefer this can add vibrancy to its modest bearing by injecting loud colors with the clutch and accessories.

Another tried and tested option in formal dressing is going for nude-colored gowns, which when complemented with striking articles, say, a leopard minaudière and snakeskin d’Orsay heels, can instantly look elegant and stylish.

Remember: as with any formal dressing occasion, choosing the right hairstyle is an important factor, too.

“If you’re wearing a gown with an embellished or ruffled neckline, keep your hair up in a neat chignon. If you’re donning a plain dress, wear your hair down and curl it to add volume,” Alexa advised.

Since made-to-order dresses can be costly, Alexa also recommends going for ready-to-wear pieces. Let ingenuity come into play; using the right accessories and hairstyle can make any ready-to-wear gown distinctive.

Invest time in scouting for shops that offer classic styles at reasonable prices. Some shops, including Karimadon, also offer services like noting down which event a customer will be wearing a particular item as to avoid having doubles.

Alexa said, “There are many long gowns available in boutiques that are not only perfect for prom, but can be worn again to weddings and other occasions.”
