City eyes relocation of Freedom Grandstand

THE City Government of Iloilo is mulling to transfer the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand to a nearby lot fronting the Muelle Loney after the Bureau of Customs (BOC) said it wanted to get back the lot where the grandstand is located.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said he is looking for government funding for a bigger grandstand to accommodate some 5,000 persons as the grandstand is also the site of major political rallies and the staing of the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival.

Mabilog said the relocation of the city’s grandstand will not affect the social events and performances at the grandstand as the site is very near and just behind the city Bureau of Fire Prevention.

The 2,400 square meter site is owned by Panay Railways Inc. (PRI) and its management officials have offered the lot to the City Government at P10,000 as monthly rental.

The PRI property at Muelle Loney has been abandoned for several years and informal settlers and small eateries that cater to dock hands and employees in nearby offices have started to occupy the area.

Mabilog said there will be no dislocation of livelihood opportunities in the area especially eateries and carinderias as he will see to it a more presentable and concrete edifice be built for the owners.

The informal settlers will be relocated at the Lanit housing site in Jaro district.
