Filipino olympian takes 19th spot in Sochi

MANILA -- Michael Christian Martinez, the country's lone bet to the 22nd Winter Olympics, settled for 19th place in the men's figure skating competition in Sochi, Russia early Saturday.

Martinez, 17, racked up 119.44 points in the free skate program and 64.81 points in the short program, bringing his total score to 184.25.

Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, who made an Olympic record on Thursday evening for breaking the 100-point mark in the short program, took the gold. Representatives from Canada and Kazakhstan scooped silver and bronze, respectively.
