Mayor assigns staff to deter littering at old public market

TALISAY City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes deployed personnel to the old Tabunok Public Market to make sure no one throws garbage into the sewer and causes another flooding on Colis St.

De los Reyes said two members of the task force under his office were assigned to guard the manhole on Colis St.

The mayor said anyone caught throwing garbage into the sewer will be arrested.

“Sampolan gyud nato. Kailangan makatilaw gyud ug priso na sila (We will teach them a lesson by putting them in jail),” he told reporters yesterday.

Business owners and residents have complained for over a month about the flooding on Colis St., which was caused by a clogged drainage and emitted foul odor in area.

Four men were earlier hired by the City Government to clean the clogged drainage but two of them died from suffocation. The two other men had to be brought to the hospital for inhaling poisonous fumes in the sewer.

The City Engineering Office finally took over, desilting the sewer and extracting the floodwater on Colis St.

City Engineer Audie Bacasmas said more than two tons of garbage were taken out from the sewer.
