CHR starts probe on lumad rights' abuses

THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) started on Thursday its investigation on alleged human rights abuses against Indigenous People in Mindanao, who are facing threats of displacement including those who are encamping at UCCP Haran.

The two-inquiry being held at the Apo View Hotel in Davao City, will be concluded today, September 25.

CHR Chair Jose Luis Martin C. Gascon issued an order last September 14 to conduct the inquiry.

Tribal chieftains, UCCP Haran church leaders, members of different progressive groups, CHR representatives, and the media attended the first day of the inquiry.

The UCCP church leaders, tribal chieftains, and those directly involved in the July 23 commotion at the UCCP Haran were subjected by the CHR into an interrogation. Other IP related human rights issues were also tackled.

Today, another set of people directly involved or affected by the IP human rights issues will also be asked to appear before the CHR in the same venue for the continuation of the said public inquiry.

Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte is one of those who are asked by the CHR to appear today, September 25, as stipulated in the order of Gascon. (RCP)
