Lawmaker to bring more projects sans 'Pork'

DESPITE the abolition recently of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) by the Supreme Court that prohibits lawmakers to implement project, the city’s second district Representative Rufus Rodriguez promised to pour more projects for his constituents san the PDAF.

On Thursday Rodriguez led the groundbreaking and turn-over of different finished projects in different barangays in his district.

He said a total of P164 million worth of 17 projects were turned over and opened in barangays Bugo, Puerto, Agusan, Tablon, F.S. Catanico, Cugman, Lapasan, Camaman-an, Lapasan, Nazareth, 29, and Consolacion.

Most of these projects, Rodriguez said, are construction of farm-to-market roads, water sanitation facilities, and expansion of barangay health centers.

Rodriguez said he is lining up more projects with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Skills Development Authority (Tesda), Department of Agriculture and other government agencies, as they are not anymore allowed to directly implement a project through the PDAF.

He explained that nowadays national-based legislators would only have to present their plans, programs and projects with the government agencies and be presented during plenary sessions at the House of Representatives, unlike in the past where because of PDAF legislators can immediately implement a project of their choice.

But Rodriguez assured that until he is congressman, there will be projects to be implemented if these are necessary for the development of his district.

Officials of the recipient barangays were thankful of Rodriguez’s efforts, as they noted such projects are badly needed in their respective villages to ease the daily activities of their constituents.

The village officials particularly mentioned the farm-to-market road as vital for the people in their daily livelihood and in the DA’s agri-business programs.

Rodriguez said a second pedestrian overpass would be constructed in Barangay Bugo to address the concerns of Del Monte Philippines Inc. employees who are endangering their lives in crossing the national highway during rush hour.

He said he is also coordinating with the health department for possible medical assistance that would benefit the villagers.

“Naningkamot gayud kita pirme, sige pakig-istorya sa mga government officials hilabina usab sa Department of Health (DOH) aron matagaan kita dinhi (We are always trying our best to speak with government officials especially from DOH so we could also get some share),” Rodriguez said.
