Support of Love Negros mayors a ‘healing process’

NEGROS Occidental Fourth District Representative Jeffrey Ferrer said the United Negros Alliance (Unega) welcomes the backing of mayors who belong to Love Negros, and they are expected to officially declare their support to his tandem with Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. next week.

"We would like to welcome the Love Negros mayors and thank them for the support because I believe this is a healing process after what happened in 2013,” he said.

During the 2010 elections, most of the local officials in Negros Occidental belonged to the United Negros Aliance then called UNA that fielded the winning tandem of Marañon and former vice governor Genaro Alvarez.

However in 2013, they parted ways. Marañon, who ran under UNA, defeated Alvarez as the standard bearer of Love Negros.

For his part, Ferrer said that more than 50 percent of members of Love Negros will support the Marañon-Ferrer tandem in the 2016 elections.

“I will not name them although some of them told me that I can name them. Let them speak for themselves," the lawmaker said.

Ferrer said the shift of support of the Love Negros mayors could be because until now, Marañon is still unopposed, and they could be satisfied with the governor's performance and advocacies.

Now on his third and final term, Ferrer has echoed Marañon’s position pushing his possible opponent, Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, to run for congressman in the First District.

Although Lacson has been saying that he is still in the process of deciding for 2016, an official of Love Negros had earlier said that Lacson has already decided to seek reelection.

Marañon has turned down talks for a merger between the Unega and Love Negros.
