Light up like magic

TECHNOLOGY never fails to surprise, and nothing is more surprising than being able to light up a bulb with your own thumb. That was the fun we had with the Apua emergency LED bulb introduced over dinner by Winchester Lemen, president of Envirotech Waste Recycling Inc., last week.

It’s a Malaysian technology, he said, and comes in 7, 9, and 12 watts. It’s like any other LED bulb, except that it has a built-in lithium ion battery that lights up when power is shut down. You charge it to your regular socket for six hours and it’s ready for use for up to five hours in very bright but not glaring white light. And it’s plastic. Meaning, there is no risk of breaking it and you can carry it in your bag should you be going out for a camping or some outdoors activity. Just moisten the electrical contact.

That was where the fun was because you can use your thumb to moisten the contact. Just moisten your thumb, hold the bulb, and place the wet thumb on the bulb’s contact and voila! You have just become a human torch. Dinner with friends Emil, Christian, Mabelle, and Nina was highlighted with the game of who can light up the bulb fast.

For some unknown reason, it took Nina several tries before she could light it up. The fast lighters? Me and Christian. Suggested retail price is P1,200 and is handier than any rechargeable lamp in the market because it’s just a bulb.
