Councilor: ‘Penalize PUJs without waste cans’

BACOLOD City Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. has urged the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) and Traffic Management Unit (TMU) to apprehend drivers whose public utility jeepneys (PUJs) do not have the required waste cans inside their vehicles.

The City Council in its regular session passed last week a resolution authored by Gamboa that enjoined both the BTAO and the TMU to apprehend drivers of PUJs with no trash/litter receptacles.

According to the resolution, most of the PUJs in Bacolod have no trash receptacles installed prompting passengers and commuters to dispose their trash anywhere on the streets.

Gamboa said irresponsible trash disposal from PUJs adds to garbage accumulation which causes drainage clogging and a violation of Bacolod City Ordinance 251 or "An Ordinance requiring owners/drivers of public utility vehicles plying Bacolod City to install a trash/litter receptacle with lid in a conspicuous area inside the vehicle."

The resolution reiterated that penalties of P150 for the first offense and an additional P50 for the succeeding offense and/or one day imprisonment shall be imposed to the apprehended violators, be they passenger, driver or owner of the public utility vehicle, in accordance to Section 5 of C.O. 251.
